We had a very memorable day on the Feast of St. Matthew, 21st September 2016. We had Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9am to 9pm, and various prayer forms during the day, including two beautiful celebrations of the Eucharist. A steady flow of people availed of the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the afternoon.
The programme for the day was well attended. We concluded with Solemn Benediction. In Matthew, as our patron and advocate, we have much to be proud of. People ask for his intercession regarding money problems, housekeeping issues, and matters of domestic conflict, amongst other situations. As part of our celebration of his Feast Day this year I composed a new Prayer to St. Matthew. As promised it is printed below.
PRAYER TO ST. MATTHEW
St. Matthew,
Holy Apostle,
Bearer of Good News,
Patron of Our Parish,
We bring our lives before you,
Our worries and fears,
Our aches and pains.
You Matthew who knew the darkness but
Embraced the Light,
You Matthew who knew greed and corruption but
Became kind and generous,
We implore your help.
You knew Jesus,
You walked with him, you talked with him
Place before him today the prayer of our hearts,
That as he looked on you with mercy and love
He may look upon us.
We make our prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen
Prayer composed by Fr. Joe McDonald, St. Matthew’s Ballyfermot
21st September 2016, Feast of St. Matthew
Perhaps from time to time light a candle at his shrine in our church here in Ballyfermot and quietly say this prayer.
